The Edmund Ravenel Letters, 1824 and 1835, include his March 1824 application to Joseph Manning, president of the Medical Society of South Carolina, as a candidate for the position of chair of chemistry and pharmacy at the newly created Medical College of South Carolina. Also included is a March 1835 letter from Edward Frost, secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Medical College, communicating the resolution passed by the Trustees of the Medical College upon Ravenel's retirement from his position on the faculty.

Dr. Edmund Ravenel, a physician, professor, plantation owner, and naturalist, was born in Charleston, S.C. and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to practicing medicine, Ravenel taught chemistry at the Medical College of South Carolina and owned plantations. He was president of the Elliott Society of Natural History and wrote numerous scientific articles.
